The Social Entrepreneurs of the Future

Today I finished writing my final essay for a training and education qualification. It was on education policy so I wasn’t expecting it to be the most interesting essay I had ever written. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

I decided to write about an article I had spotted in the latest edition of Social Enterprise Magazine that talks about how social enterprise will be introduced into the school curriculum for 11-18 year olds from 2008.

That means that there will be a whole generation of young people who will have learnt about social enterprise at school. I find that incredibly exciting.

According to a DTI survey from 2006 only 26% (section 9.19) of people know of the concept of social enterprise. With the introduction of social enterprise into the national curriculum maybe we can hope for the future where that percentage will rise.

Just imagine a whole generation of young people that are introduced to social enterprise as a real option for their future. Just imagine what a difference that could make to our communities and our world.
